How To Pray
                      More Suggestions to get started

Time spent with God is never wasted. Prayer should be as much a part of our daily
routine as eating, drinking and sleeping. Spending time with God is essential for
healthy spiritual growth and not an optional extra, yet many of us experience
frustration knowing that our prayer life could be much more than it is. However,
starting a regular prayer routine can be difficult.
Here are some suggestions on how to start your personal prayer life:
1.        Choose a designated daily time to meet with God.

Write it in your appointment book. Fix the time firmly in your mind. If your primary
prayer time is not when you first get up in the morning, remember nonetheless to make
contact with God first thing in the day. And make sure to set aside enough time.
3.        Choose a regular location where you can meet with God.

It may be your office, bedroom or garden. Select a place where interruptions can be
kept to a minimum
2.        Set a specific minimum amount of time for your daily appointment
with God.
This may vary, depending upon your circumstances. At times it may increase - or
emergencies may reduce it. On holidays, vacations, and days off, plan on spending
extra time with God.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your name,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Matthew 6:9-13
Our Father: calls for respect (hallowed be Thy name).

Thy kingdom come: pray that Jesus will come back soon.

Thy will be done: pray that you will understand the importance of God doing His will through
us rather than us leading ourselves.

Give us our daily bread: acknowledge, ask and be thankful for the tangible things in life.

Forgiveness: pray for forgiveness for your sins. We should not resent others - we need to
forgive others in order for God to forgive us.

Lead us not into temptation: ask God to help you overcome temptation, and to help you get out
of sin.

Deliver us from evil: pray that you will choose God's way for your life.
The ACTS model will be helpful to you as you learn how to pray. ACTS stands for
Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication.
                      ACTS Model
•        Adoration means worship. We encourage you to begin your time of prayer by
adoring and praising God. Praise Him for who He is and for all that He has done for you.
God delights in your praises!
•        Confession, the next component, means agreeing with God about the things that
you have done wrong. It’s a time to express sorrow about what you have said, thought,
or done that is not pleasing to Him. Ask God to forgive you for these things, and then
believe that He does so freely. When you confess your sins, you receive God’s
cleansing and this helps to remove any barrier in your communication with Him.
(read 1 John 1:9)
•        Thanksgiving basically means being thankful to God. Thank Him for His love,
protection, and provision just to name a few things.
•        Supplication is the final component, and this means praying for your needs and
for the needs of others, such as friends, family, your pastor, missionaries, government
leaders, and persecuted Christians around the world. You may want to pray for such
things as God’s guidance, wisdom, and opportunities to serve.
You can follow these six simple steps, AWCIPA, for powerful prayer:

Adoration is to worship God and to fulfill the commandment to love Him with all of
your heart, mind and soul. As you spend time in adoration, you praise God for who He
is - your Creator, your Provider and your Redeemer.

Wait in silence for God to speak to you. Sometimes the Lord is silent, so do not
become upset if you do not hear anything when you pray. Many times you will hear
things outside of your prayer time through scripture, circumstances or people.

Confess anything in your life which needs healing and forgiveness.

Intercede for others - ask God for the needs of others. You can ask the Lord to give
you a heart for those He wants you to serve or keep a written prayer list of family,
friends, coworkers, your church, etc.

Pray for yourself - make sure your requests are properly motivated and will glorify
God.

Admire Him some more and thank Him for all that He has done and will do in your life!
